Description
by Arvin S. Gibson
Do angels really exist? Are joy and happiness possible in a world periodically driven mad by spasms of famine, terror, oppression and war? Does life have purpose, or are we cast here as a throw of the dice to be buffeted to and fro by various cataclysms? Is it possible to find joy midst the bramble bushes of life? In Search of Angels is about life and the quest for joy, happiness, and meaning. In it, the author tells how the Gospel of Jesus Christ led him, and other unique individuals, to a fuller understanding of joy and happiness, and how it helped them to find and magnify joy and happiness despite severe adversity.
His quest for joy carries the author through the Great Depression, war-time experiences on Iwo Jima, marriage, education, family and corporate life. The quest extends to the experiences of others who influenced the author in his personal search. For instance, the book describes how Lou Minkin, a Jewish man looking for prophets, finds them, and obtains joy in a unique way. DeAnne Anderson Shelley finds joy as she walks away from her wheelchair in a remarkable set of circumstances.
The author’s challenge to his father to “show me some angels” is met by his description of an extraordinary out-of-body experience. Later, the author finds angels in unexpected places. The spiritual natures of joy and happiness are defined. Actions which lead to an expansion of joy are described, as are those acts which lead to defeat, discouragement and despair.
Although the book describes the quest for angels and joy by specific individuals, in a larger sense it is about every person’s search for the basic meanings of life. The failures and successes, trials and triumphs, tragedies and joys which everyone experiences are all a part of the adventure of life. Although they differ in kind for each individual, they are the universal schoolmasters which teach the principles of the Lord’s plan for eternal joy and happiness.
