This talk begins by quoting and explaining Biblical passages warning of the apostasy that began in New Testament times: eight prophetic statements by the Savior and apostles Peter, John, and Paul. Then it identifies six essential characteristics of Christ’s church that were lost as that apostasy took place:
- (1) priesthood;
- (2) a chain of ordinations;
- (3) 12 apostles;
- (4) prophets;
- (5) revelation; and
- (6) recognition that a universal apostasy would occur.
Catholic and Protestant doctrines on each of these six criteria are examined, and it is shown that neither holds any of these essential beliefs.
The talk then summarizes the early historical events in the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ, beginning with the appearance of God the Father and Jesus to Joseph Smith. It cites Biblical prophecies relating to each of those events— showing how they were literally fulfilled.
The speaker draws the final conclusion that only The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fully accepts the reality of the universal apostasy, fulfills Biblical prophecies of the restoration, and has the essential characteristics of the New Testament Church today.
